“You are in perimenopause,” the Dr told me as I sat in his consulting room with my 2-year-old daughter.

Menopause? I was 42, a busy mum of two young kids, my life didn’t have time for me to sleep badly (it was disturbed enough by the kids!), or for me to feel exhausted all the time, or, even worse, to undo the effort of getting back into my clothes post pregnancy, let alone to forget to collect my kids from school -yes this did actually happen!


So, you know what I did, I ignored the whole concept. Well, if you don’t think about it, it’s not happening right? Except, it didn’t go away because it was real, and it was happening.


Eventually, after a few stubborn weeks of denial, I pulled up my big girl pants and made a decision: To Deal With IT, the "Thing", the "Unmentionable", the "Inevitable"! And therein lay the problem…How?


And right then the struggle started. So, I took a step back and thought about my day job, as a Registered Nutritionist coaching people to healthier lifestyles and preventing type 2 diabetes, what do I do with my clients? What do the ones my age and older tell me? What can I ask them? What can I do to help them more?


Then the rollercoaster of learning started. Because mid-life, when menopause starts, is a BIG time of health change for women. We are all taught about puberty but who can teach us about the end of this reproductive life cycle? This natural, and inevitable change. How do we start to navigate it? Where is this information hidden?


My research led me to join an organisation that supported menopausal women and ran weekend retreats. It was great! It was fun! Our ladies had found their tribe, they were no longer alone! The problem for me was that it was only helpful for the dozen women that attended the expensive, luxury spa focused weekend. This was not going to help the likes of you and me in the real, busy world.
